A Date with Mom at Bondi & Bourke

When it comes to our family, the celebrations never really end.

There’s a lot to celebrate about life and that includes life itself na parang second home na yata namin) two days in a row with us and her friends a week after her actual birthday, oh diba go lang ng go! Syempre aariba rin si mother dear! #AbetTurns25 charing!

We’ve always been wanting to eat at Bondi & Bourke since it opened, but my mom was still at the province at that time, working girl alam mo naman hehe~ She told me to eat ahead of her, but I wanted to eat with her kasi, so I told her I’ll just wait for her nalang. So when I called her on her birthday (I literally waited until midnight so I would be the first one to greet her haha), we made plans and I booked a reservation at Bondi & Bourke the next day.

I was quite excited to see the parentals! Of course there’s the reason of putting my wallet to a rest because theirs will take over, if ya know what I mean 😉 However, that’s just the cherry on top. Nothing really beats the joy of having your parents around and your family in full force! And YAHS their arrival means we’re gonna eat again!

Bondi & Bourke is the new grub pub in Salcedo, Makati brought to us by award-winning Chef Wade Watson, and it’s ready to show us what the modern Australian food experience is all about.  Up to 20 guests can also enjoy a private dining experience in a private dining room with the ‘Chef’s Table’ where they can see the behind-the-scenes action in the kitchen while enjoying a degustation package of  appetizers, entrees, desserts, and “the best roast in town”, paired with selected wines.

The interiors were clean, bright and cozy. Mom and I only had a quick lunch because we wanted to seize the day (a.k.a. shopping in our books). CARPE DIEM!

The Menu

The name “The Australian Burger’ cinched it for us. I mean, it’s THE AUSTRALIAN BURGER. Its name speaks for itself. We just had to order it.

It’s actually enormous, but it looks normal in this picture for some angular reasons. It’s so big that 1/4 of the burger can make you full, at least in my case. No kidding. This burger is basically EVERYTHING. There’s a grilled ribeye on top of a a thick and juicy beef patty,  caramelized onions, pickled beets, a fried egg, and bacon. GOODBYE DIET AND HELLO CHOLESTEROL AND PROTEIN. Note that the serving in this restaurant is quite big, so one order is already more than enough for two people.

I love how everything just blends well together and how the ribeye adds a different taste from the usual burger. It’s like a breakfast burger plus more, and the beets were very delicious!

The Australian Burger (P695.00). I’d give this:

Next, we had the Steak and Mushroom pie because you gotta have pie when you’re in Australia (or an Australian resto for this matter lol). It had braised beef ragout and garlic mushrooms inside the puff pastry, with crispy bacon bits sprinkled on top. I must say, this was the dish that made us go OH MY GOSH coupled with our eyes rolling backwards because IT. IS. JUST. SO. GOOD. The steak inside is tender and it tastes perfect, the sauce is seasoned well and just oozes when you cut the pie, and the crust is flaky and buttery.

It’s only right to order Lamingtons for dessert in an Australian restaurant, and that’s indeed what we did! The Lamingtons are available in Chocolate, Strawberry and Lemon flavor. The strawberry one was the best for me, I think it blended well with the coconut and the filling. I’m not quite a fan of coconut though, so I didn’t enjoy it as much as I hoped.

Lamingtons (P50.00 each). I’d give this:

I would certainly dine again and have the Steak and Bacon pie. Australian food is an unconventional type of cuisine to be served at the table of the Philippine dining scene, so it’s quite a delight to dining enthusiasts like me! What a pleasant addition to the new line of restaurants in Manila!
